It was Halloween Parade time at St. Paul School

The annual St. Paul School Halloween parade brought out students from pre-kindergarten through third grade on Friday afternoon. The parade started from the school and paraded south and around the block. They were cheered on by other classes who watched. Classes later had parties. Juliana Garza qualified as a parace princess because brother Ramiro is in the first grade.

Cross had central place in life of St. Paul

VATICAN CITY - In today's general audience, held in St. Peter's Square in the presence of 20,000 faithful, the Pope spoke of St. Paul's theology of the Cross.

The Holy Father recalled how the Apostle of the Gentiles, following his experience on the road to Damascus , changed his life completely. Paul remained deeply marked by "the central significance of the Cross: he understood that Jesus died and rose for everyone. The Cross, then, demonstrated the gratuitous and merciful love of God", he said.

"For St. Paul the Cross had a fundamental primacy in the history of humanity. It is the focal point of his theology because 'Cross' means salvation as grace for all creatures. The theme of the Cross became an essential and principal element of the Apostle's preaching".

Benedict XVI then went on to highlight how "the 'stumbling block' and 'foolishness' of the Cross", of which St. Paul, speaks are to be found "in the fact that where there seemed to be only failure, suffering and defeat, there, in reality, is all the power of God's limitless Love".

"If for the Jews the reason for rejecting the Cross was in the Revelation, in other words in the God of the Fathers, for the Greeks - that is, the pagans - the criterion for opposing the Cross lay in reason. For them, in fact, the Cross was death, foolishness. ... It was clearly inconceivable to imagine that a God could end up on a Cross! And we see how this Greek logic has also become the common logic of our own time".

"Why", the Pope asked, "did St. Paul make the word Cross such a fundamental part of his preaching? The answer", he said, "is not difficult: the Cross reveals 'the power of God' which is different from human power; it reveals, in fact, His love".

For the Apostle "the crucified Christ is wisdom because He truly shows Who God is: the power of love which goes even unto the Cross to save man. God uses means and instruments that to human beings seem to be mere weakness. The crucified Christ reveals, on the one hand, the weakness of man and, on the other, the true power of God, in other words the gratuitousness of love; and precisely this complete gratuitousness of love is true wisdom".

The Holy Father explained how St. Paul, in his Second Letter to the Corinthians, makes "two fundamental affirmations: the one, that Christ, Whom God made to be sin for our sake, died for everyone; and the other, that God reconciled us to Him not counting our trespasses against us. It is from this 'ministry of reconciliation' that all slaves are ransomed".

" St. Paul renounced his own life and committed himself totally to the ministry of reconciliation, of the Cross which is salvation for us all. This is something we must also do. We can find our strength in the humility of love and our wisdom in the weakness to renounce, thus to enter into the strength of God. ... We have to mould our lives on this true wisdom, not living for ourselves, but living in faith in the God of Whom we can all say: 'He loved me and gave Himself for me'".

More then 70 receive anointing on Sunday

Deacon Frank Lonteen and Terry Nesline, director of Adult Ministries, lay hands
on parishioners at anointing ceremony. The pastor, the Rev. Fr. Ralph Thomas,
anoints each parishioner with holy oil on the head and on the hands

A large group of parishioners, between 70 and 80, filled the middle pews of the church after the 9 a.m. Mass on Sunday for the Anointing of the Sick.

Many Catholics still think of anointing of the sick by its previous name, extreme unction, a Sacrament given to those who were at the point of death. While we have become accustomed to the sacrament's new name, many Catholics still think of it as a private sacrament, administered by a priest to a single individual.

More and more parishes today are scheduling celebrations of the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick as a communal sacrament celebrated to its fullest.

One of the general principles of Vatican Council's renewal of Catholic worship states: "Liturgical services are not private functions, but are celebrations belonging to the Church....Therefore liturgical services involve the whole Body of the Church; they manifest it and have effects upon it;…..Whenever rites...make provision for communal celebration involving the presence and active participation of the faithful, it is to be stressed that this way of celebrating them is to be preferred, as far as possible, to a celebration that is individual and, so to speak, private" (Liturgy, #26-27).

The laying on of hands on the person to be anointed recalls Jesus own manner of healing:
"At sunset, all who had people sick with various diseases brought them to him. He laid his hands on each of them and cured them" (Luke 4:40).
Then the priest makes the Sign of the Cross with the blessed oil on the sick person's forehead, saying:
"Through this holy anointing may the Lord in his love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit."
Then the priest anoints the palms of the sick one's hands with the Sign of the Cross:
" May the Lord who frees you from sin save you and raise you up."

First grade enjoys trip to orchard

In spite of a chilly day, students in Mrs. Suzanne Inglis' first grade at St. Paul School had a terrific time at Beckwith's Orchard on Tuesday, October 21.

The rain stopped and students learned all sorts of science and local history at this 130-year-old family-owned orchard. The farm, located just outside Kent in Franklin
Township, has been in the family for five generations and has grown and sold fruit for more than 125 yeard.

Students had fun hugging a really old tree (more than 125 years old), finding their way through a two and one-half acre corn maze, looking for and running through the giant "B", being put into the apple cooler, and tasting different varieties of delicious apples.

The first graders also also liked learning about ways to use our world's res
ources in friendlier ways like growing vegetable gardens and using collected and stored rain water and solar energy to run things like a garden fountain.

Students loved drinking the cider and taking home apples.

Euchre tournament cancelled

The Euchre Tournament scheduled for November1 has been cancelled due to lack of interest., the St. Paul Boosters Club reports. Only about 20 expressed interest and no advance tickets were sold.

The Boosters now are concentrating on promoting the February 21 reverse raffle and membership in the 300 Cljub. The club needs to succeed with those projects to offest costs of CYO fees and gym utilities and maintenance.

300 Club winners for October were:
#031 Connie Phillips
#212 Mary Keller
#243 George and Betsy Roberts
#009 Mike and Michelle McGraw

The Reverse Raffle is scheduled for February 21, 2009. Tickets are $40 per person.

The club also is pushing for 300 Club members. Memberships at $60 per number should be renewed before the January 25, 2009 drawing.

The goal of the 300 Club is to secure the support of 300 members to help provide the financing our athletes need to compete. The 300 Club assists in the financial support of our St. Paul athletes while allowing its members the opportunity to win weekly cash prizes.

There are 52 weekly drawings where each member has the opportunity to win $100. Two special drawings, one in June and one in December, allow members the opportunity to win bigger prizes. Winners receive their prize by mail and their names are listed in the St. Paul bulletin following the drawing

To become a member of the St. Paul 300 Club you need only donate $60 for the calendar year. Your $60 donation makes you eligible to win at each drawing that calendar year. With a full roster of 300 members the 300 Club could provide more than $10,000 for uniforms, equipment, CYO fees, gym maintenance and utilities. At this time the Booster Club pays one-half of the yearly utilities of the John Jenkins Gymnasium.

Parents and guardians of athletes participating on St. Paul teams are required to become 300 Club members in order for their child to participate.

Kindergarten goes to the Pumpkin Patch

Mrs. Debbie Dodson’s kindergarten class at St. Paul went on a trip to Kingsway Pumpkin Farm near Hartville on Wednesday.

The children enjoyed a puppet show about how pumpkins grow, went on a hayride to the pumpkin patch where they picked their own pumpkins, bot their faces painted, played in dried corn, crawled through a maze and fed farm animals.

It was a great day.

What a lovely carriage to enjoy in a pumpkin patch

Rites for Roy 'Bud' Minns Saturday

Roy "Bud" Minns

``See, I told you I was sick," said Bud...his sense of humor shining through even toward the end of his illness.

Roy "Bud" Minns, 68, passed away peacefully Tuesday, October 21, 2008 at the Hospice Care Center at the end of a courageous battle with cancer.

Preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Hester; infant sons, Anthony and David; his loving wife of 44 years,
Carol; and sisters, Eleanor and Ditty; Bud is survived by sister, Joyce (Bill); two wonderful children, Mark Minns and Lauri Walker; beautiful granddaughters, Kristin and Kylie; special friend, Rosemary Urbano, and many other family and friends.

Bud
retired from Goodyear Tire with many years service. After the passing of his wife, Carol, he joined a New Beginnings group where he met his sweetheart Rosemary and shared many happy times with over the past couple of years. His greatest joys in life were gardening, Indy car racing, golf, bowling and rooting for Akron U and Ohio State Football. He loved spending time with his grandkids, always cheering them on at their games and activities. He was a great friend to so many and enjoyed having friends and family over for cookouts and going all out to decorate his yard for the holidays. He had a happy go lucky outlook on life and would want us to celebrate the happy times together rather than mourn his death.

Special thanks to our friends at Hospice and Cuyahoga Falls General Chem Dept. for their wonderful care.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, 10 a.m. at St. Paul Catholic Church. Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday, 6 to 8 p.m. at the Anthony Funeral Home Kucko-Anthony-Kertesz Chapel, 1990 S. Main St. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Paul Catholic Church, 1580 Brown St., Akron, OH 44301 or Hospice Care Center, 3358 Ridgewood Rd., Akron, OH 44333. 8 have given 91 years service to Summit Cluster 6

Eight priests of the Summit South 6 cluster have amassed 271 years of service to 38 parishes and six hospitals in the Cleveland Diocese. They have given 91 years of service just to the four parishes in our cluster. The eight include the four current pastors, one parochial vicar and three retired pastors.

This Sunday is Priesthood Sunday which is set aside each year to honor our priests.

Fr. James R. Scheicher, just retired in August this year after serving St. Francis deSales parish for 34 years, is the veteran. He has served as a priest in three other parishes in the 54 years since his ordination in 1954.

Fr. G. David Bline, just appointed administrator at St. Francis, has the least amount of service, but he has been a priest for a decade serving three different parishes.

The current pastor with the most service is Fr. David Halaiko, who has given 41 years of service to five different parishes–the last 31 years as pastor of Nativity of the Lord Jesus. He is the only pastor who has served the Nativity parish since it was founded in July 1977. He incidentally was a parochial vicar at St. Paul from June 1976 to July 1977.

The four parishes in our cluster have served Catholics in the area for a total of 226 years and there were 15 pastors.

St. Paul, the oldest of the parishes, has been served by eight pastors in 91 years since the first Mass on October 12, 1917. The second oldest is St. Francis deSales
which has had only two pastors in the 60 years since it was founded in May 1948. The founding pastor was Fr. Francis Diedrich. Queen of Heaven has had four pastors in 44 years since it was establishes in June, 1964.as a mission and two years later as a parish.

Sunday is fifth anniversary of church dedication

Beacon Journal coverage of razing of the old church in August, 2000

Sunday, October 26, 2008, is the fifth anniversary of the dedication of the new St. Paul Catholic Church

Total cost of the church was over $2.5 million and the gym cost about $650,000. Other costs, fund-raising expenses and construction interest, added another $75,000
so total cost for the project then was about $3,250,000. The church is 12,500 square feet and seats 790.. The gym is about 9,500 square feel and features a full-size regulation high school basketball court.

The original parish was established in September 1919, when the Rev. James Hanley was appointed pastor. Shortly thereafter, Harvey S. Firestone provided 14 lots on Brown Street for a church building. On Easter Sunday, April 4, 1920, the first Mass was held in the new building.
The church, a Romanesque-style structure with round arched
windows and Doric columns could seat about 700.

With growth of the parish, other buildings were added. Because of overcrowding, parishioners had been separated in two 11 a.m. Sunday Masses -- one in the church and one in the parish chapel, which was built in 1958.

But the original church structure began to fail in th 1960s. The chur
ch was used for one liturgical service and as a gathering place for the school, until January 2000 when a piece of plaster fell while the church was empty and engineers determined it was not safe for occupancy because its main support beams were sagging.

There was a parish-wide survey in the spring of 2000 to determine what to do. A building committee was formed with Michael J. Merle, president of Ray Fogg Building Methods Inc. of Cleveland, as chairman. The building committee met 11 times from July 24, 2000 to January 22, 2001 Members, in addition to Merle were John Amedeo, Sally Casenhiser, Mary Ann Courdriet, Mike Demczak, Tony DiDonato, Kelly Dodson, Bob Hamilton, Father John Jenkins, Rosemarie Muha, Dick Rinella, Doug Root, John Semonin, Debbie Speck and Mike Hausch.

Parishioners and neighbors of St. Paul's gathered August 24, 2000 as a wrecking crew razed the 80-year-old landmark.

The emotion was described by 77-year-old Katie Burrell in an article the next day in the Akron Beacon Journal

``I got so upset that I had to leave,'' said Burrell. ``I started feeling sick to my stomach when I saw it coming down. It just got to me. It was like watching my memories being taken away. I went to school there. I was married there. My nine children all went to school there and received their sacraments there. My grandchildren and now my great-grandchildren go to church there.''

Many of the parishioners who gathered to watch took a brick from the old building with them as they left for home.

``It's a sad time for the parish,” said Fr. John Jenkins who had been pastor for nearly 19 years. “but repair would have been extremely costly, and we would have still had the same aging building It's a parish that has been a staple in the park, and people don't want to see the building go. But the parish will still be here.''

A preliminary design for the church was given to Bishop Pilla in Janiuary, 2000 and in late Spring 2001 a Capital Campaign started.

Construction bids were approved in the Spring of 2002.: Fr. John Jenkins, pastor, and Martin J. Amos, auxiliary bishop of the Cleveland Diocese broke ground for the new church on Sunday, July 28, 2002.

The church was dedicated by Bishop Anthony J. Pilla on Sunday, October 26, 2003 and work on the gymnasium was done from July to November 2003.

Mass for Larry Kalgreen is Monday

Lawrence Norman Kalgreen, of Akron, Ohio, died on October 17, 2008 at age 84.

Larry was born in Akron to Bernard and Minnie (Nordland) Kalgreen and grew up in the Goodyear Heights neighbo
rhood of Akron. Upon a his return from service in World War II, Larry married the love of his life, Mary Frances Jones, on September 1, 1945 and together they raised their five children in Firestone Park.

Larry Kalgreen's primary loves were his family, his faith and his work. He was a devoted and loving husband
to his wife of 63 years, Mary. He was a calm, joyous and patient father who gave a wonderful example to his children of how to be a good parent and strong adult.

Larry's dee
p and abiding faith in God and the Roman Catholic Church led him to serve on the Parish Council for St. Paul Catholic Church as a Eucharistic Minister. He was a Third Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus Council 3410 and served as a trustee of the Loyola of the Lakes Retreat Center.

Larry began working at Akron Bearing Company, a business started by his wife's parents, Ralph and Frances Jones, in 1946. He served as President until he retired in 1989, but continued to go to work until recently. He loved going to work every day, especially with his brother-in-law Jack Fickes and, under their leadership, the company grew into a successful business that is continuing into its 4th generation of family ownership. Larry's dedications to high business ethics and strong customer service have been instrumental to this family-owned business thriving for over 68 years.

In his free time, Larry loved being outdoors where he would enjoy golfing (where it never rained, just had "heavy dew"), hiking in the Summit County Metroparks (especially with his children when they were young), coaching K of C Little League, fishing, bird watching and working in his yard and garden.

Larry was a proud veteran of World War II. He served in the United States Army Air Corps as pilot of a B-24 Liberator bomber and was a prisoner of war in Germany for eight months.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard and Minnie Kalgreen; his three sisters, Margaret Haddad (Fred), Helen Rich (Armand) and Irene Kerkeshner; his brother, Bernard; and his sister-in-law, Patricia Fickes (Jack).

Larry is survived by his wife, Mary Frances (Jones) Kalgreen; by their five children, Katherine Cook (Allen), Susan Kalgreen, Andrew Kalgreen (Pelagia), Peter Kalgreen (Diane) and Matthew Kalgreen (Judy); their 13 grandchildren, Jennifer Carter (David), Jessica Cook, PFC Thomas Kalgreen, David Kalgreen, Joanna Kalgreen, Kristen Kyle (Troy), Jeremy Kalgreen, Patrick Kalgreen, Elisa Rowland, Erika Rowland, Timothy Kalgreen, Steven Kalgreen and Daniel Kalgreen; his three great-grandchildren, Ella Kyle, Rebecca Carter and Joshua Carter; and his sister-in-law, Rita Kalgreen.

Larry and his family are in awe of the total care and dedication of the staff of the VNS Hospice Care Center. Their efforts allowed Larry's final days to be peaceful and calm as he made ready to make the final journey to meet his Lord.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, 11 a.m. at St. Paul Catholic Church, 1580 Brown Street, Akron, OH 44301. Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday, 2 to 6 p.m. at the Anthony Funeral Home Kucko-Anthony-Kertesz Chapel, 1990 South Main St. (PLEASE NOTE NEW ADDRESS). Donations may be made in memory of Larry Kalgreen St. Paul Catholic Church Building Fund, or Visiting Nurse Service Hospice Care Center, 3358 Ridgewood Road, Akron, OH 44333. Help Wanted: Blog reporters, photographers

Before you rush off to the Ministry/Stewardship Fair to donate your time, talent and treasure why not do something a little selfish:

You could promote your own ministry or parish organization by becoming a "volunteer" reporter, photographer or proofreader for this blog, Saint Paul TODAY.

We hope to enlist an individual from each of the more than 30 ministries in the parish to keep us informed. You do not need to be a writer or even a good photographer. Just provide us with all the information you can think of to keep us informed. We will do the writing and get the photos ready for posting. If you have been paying just a little bit of attention, you know that we also could use a few proofreaders to read the articles on line and let us know so we can fix all our misspellings and typos,. We always would like to hear about any addition or changes needed to the listing of parish events in our online calender.

If you are too busy perhaps you will be certain that your organization appoints someone to be your contact person for the blog.

To volunteer or list your contact person, write to hliggett@sbcglobal.net

Morgan Munro: 'Do the Right Thing' honoree

Morgan with Major Craig Gilbride, Supt. James Davis and Billy Soule

Morgan Munroe found a lost 18-month-old boy last July and stayed with him while her mother went home to call 911. She stayed with the boy after police arrived and gave him water and a cookie.

Because of this Morgan was one of 11 students who won "Do The Right Thing" awards presented Wednesday in City Council chambers.. Students had a place of honor, sitting around the City Council table in seats normally occupied by councilmen.

The "Do the Right Thing" program was started in 1990 in Florida and was brought here when an Akron police officer noticed and urged the mayor to begin the program here.

Morgan, daughter of Diann and Jim Munro is a second grader in Miss Mary Means classroom at St. Paul and will be making her first Holy Communion in May. She was recommended for the award by school secretary Mary Ann DeKemper.

The Munros live near Firestone Park on Girard Street and often take walks to
the park or around the neighborhood, They were just going for a walk in the neighborhood that day and Munro saw the little boy sitting on the porch. She thought that was odd because neighbor at that house was not home. Morgan went on he porch to talk to the boy and noticed he had one shoe off and one shoe on. She stayed with him while her mother went to call 911. The boy matched a missing child description on the radio. The police officer asked Morgan to keep talking to the boy and to give him a cookie and a drink..

The child's mother finally came running home and took the boy, Mrs. Munroe said they were not able to learn anything about the mother or why the child was there alone. She did not bother to say 'thanks,' but Morgan knows she did the right thing.

Stories like hers about all sorts of incidents earned similar awards for 10 other students.

Presiding at the ceremonies were Billy Soule, assistant to Mayor Don Plusquellic; Major Craig Gilbride, second in command of the police department, and Dr. James Davis, superintendent of Akron Public Schools,

Seminarian's Diary: Priestly Formation

This is the seond post of a continuing Diary of a Seminarian. The author is Matthew Jordan, a member of St. Francis de Sales parish.

A Seminarian's Diary: Pillars of Priestly Formation

By MATTHEW JORDAN
As I sit here one week before mid terms and fall break, I have observed that the seminary has made it so a guy can truly discern God’s call and really get to learn about himself.

The best way to evaluate how I have learned about myself is to explain one of the key components of the seminary. The four pillars for priestly formation (PPF) dictate
how all seminary programs in the United States are to be structured. The PPF challenge the seminarian to grow and learn about himself.

The first PPF is the human formation which pertains to the kind of person the priest is developing into. Under the umbrella of the first PPF, are things like how a seminarian relates to other people, how is his health, how does he present himself, and a key component is how is he involved in his parish.

I had the unique opportunity to go back to St. Francis de Sales for Eucharistic Devotions. I was able to come home to the parish that I love and to be a part of what I think is the most important weekend in the parish’s year. I also was told by a friend what a large impact I have had on her life and how God has worked through me. For those two reasons I have been thanking God a lot in the past month.

The second PPF is the spiritual formation which pertains to how a seminarian is relating to God. I have gotten the privilege of meeting twice with my spiritual director, Fr. Vrana from ironically enough St. Francis de Sales in Parma. He has already challenged me to grow in my understanding of God’s call and to know Trinity more intimately. That coupled with Mass and Liturgy of the Hours has helped me grow closer to God.

Intellectual formation makes up the third PPF. It is mostly a focus on one’s studies. I am proud to report that thus far I have been able to maintain mostly A’s and B’s. I do not know for sure what my grades are until midterms are released, but I am positive that they will be great.

The final PPF is the pastoral formation which in a sense is Christian Service. Every Borromeo Seminarian is assigned an apostolate that they must do for 2-4 hours a week. My apostolate is Mary Mavec, which is an adult daycare for mentally handicapped adults. Two other guys and I play basketball, “Simon Says” and kickball with them. This can sometimes be challenging and often gets repetitive, but I have been blessed to be able see the joy that my simple presence can bring.

The seminary has been a great experience for me thus far. I truly feel that this is where I am called to be and I have a newfound peace since arriving here. Thank you for all of your prayers and know that I am also praying for you. God Bless!
